The Danger of Wearable Technology

Wearable technology is a new and upcoming innovation that has grabbed the attention of millions. It comes in many different forms such as smart watches, smart glasses, and even clothes with embedded technology. These technologies perform the same job, like telling time, but have many additional benefits. These benefits include being able to read text messages, checking weather, checking workouts, analyzing food data, regulating health, and many new features that will eventually be released in the future. This technology brings the data that previously could only be accessed from phone/computer to something that you can wear. While they make daily routines much easier and efficient, they come with many different dangers that could easily outweigh the benefits.

An extremely controversial topic that is associated with any technology is security. By introducing technology that is used often on a daily basis, it gives much more room for security breach. The software in these technologies is very limited since it is in its infancy, which creates a much bigger risk for stealing information. There is no encryption on this type of data yet, which allows hackers to very easily access your information. They use Bluetooth and WiFi connections, which can is another path for a hacker to access your information. This is all of the software side, but physically, this technology take away your attention. By taking away your attention, you could potentially run into other people or vehicles. These could lead to injuries, even fatal. Using phones already takes away attention; with the addition of wearable technology people will eventually be oblivious to their surroundings.

While these concerns could be very dangerous, the companies have been improving their technologies. Smart glasses are taking account of the dangers and making precautions to limit usage in public. They make sure that your focus is your vision rather than the information that it shows you. Another recent concern that has been brought up is the direct relation to health. Many phones have been tested to show that they release a little bit a radiation. Now that we are attaching technology to our bodies, there could be a much bigger impact on our internal systems due to these technologies. There are many different problems that are correlated with wearable technology and we have to take that into account when using them in our daily lives.
